Mapping of Forest Damages Caused by a Tornado 2012 in Gera, Germany Using Terrasar-x Change Detection

In this paper an object based classification method for detection of storm damages with TerraSAR-X images is described. The segmentation process is carried out with the software Ecognition. Classification is done by setting a threshold, which is identified by visual interpretation. Afterwards a region growing method is applied and forest GIS and pre storm ortho photos are used to improve the accuracy of the classification. The user and the producer accuracy achieved is 87.5%; out of the 16 damaged areas found and measured on ground (with area sizes ranging from 0.1 to 0.97 ha) 14 could be detected with the developed semi-automatic TerraSAR-X change detection approach. Two areas which were not affected by the storm were falsely classified as storm damaged areas.
